“Fertility”-Silvia Björg

Rough and hardened minerals that birth from the core of the Earth and the seeds of the future. Fragile but protected by the moss, the roots and the seaweeds, waiting to the life awakes again… This series of wall sculptures are part of a project that I begun around 2011 and that I call “Fertility”.
The beginning of the work is the memory of the natural surroundings, images that are fixed in my mind after a walk-in nature. The birds make their nests at the floor and it´s very common to find eggs between the stones and plants. I´ve been noticing that´s easy to find garbage and sea creatures and birds are affected by that…I just want to awake the public about this reality.
I mix and play with natural and artificial materials to show ambiguity between manmade and organic, today is not easy to distinguish between both.
The circle symbolizes for me the origin, the destiny and the cycles of life, and I choose this form as a “protection” for the nests. But though the eggs are fragile they are naturally protected and hided by nature itself.
What I see in a horizontal plane I move to a vertical plane to make the viewer aware of the treasure that nature is, and to be aware of where we walk in nature…it´s not he same to look at something that to see it…
It´s important to maintain the equilibrium, we cannot permit ourselves to break the natural harmony, because it´s going to affect us directly, cause everything is connected.
The technique that I use to work with is mixed and use both natural organic materials mixed with artificial elements to form very three-dimensional sculptural images.
An Important artistic influence in my artwork is the Land Art.
I am a multidisciplinary artist that had worked in painting, sculpture, illustration, art installations, digital photography and contemporary jewellery design. I show my personal view of the world that surrounds me and at this time I do it with three-dimensional artworks that I could call wall sculptures because of their strong texture.
About the artist:
Silvia Björg is a half spanish and half icelandic artist. She finished her carrier in Fine Arts at the University of Vigo, ( sculpture ), after five years, in 2005. She has a high school arts teacher´s degree by the University of Santiago de Compostela in Spain and six years of jewellery design studies by the Art and Design School from the same city. She had exhibited her work in solo and collective exhibitions in Spain and Iceland and her works are in private and public exhibitions in United States, Haiti, Luxemburg, Dominican Republic, Spain and Iceland.
Nature has always been a strong influence in all her artworks.
From a plastic and visual multidisciplinary language, she evoque’s and provoque, in a symbiosis between ethic and aesthetic, in an action of contemplation, like the Romanticism did, in search of the Sublime, but from an analytic point of view. The walking as a practice it´s in a fact a way of building the landscape. Mixing natural organic materials with manmade elements, in a reflection about human action that´s not easy to avoid. Being permeable to the history of Land Art, each and every artwork shows like this a physical and intellectual practice, a pathway print, of a critical immersion in the landscape, to know, to recognize and to create awareness from her affection to Mother Nature.
